On 24 August 2026 Alibaba shipped Wan 3.0 — a new generation of its video model, the day after the company raised $10.2B on the Hong Kong exchange for AI infrastructure. The model takes not only text, stills, audio, and video, but also documents — PPTX, PDF, DOC, XLS — and can assemble a finished clip from them. We plugged Wan 3.0 into NEIRON next to ByteDance Seedance 2.5 and ran the same prompts. Our take: Wan 3.0 does not beat Seedance on look, but it covers most production jobs at a fraction of the cost — and that matters more than chasing a perfect frame.
Seedance 2.5: where it is still stronger
Seedance 2.5 remains our benchmark among closed models: it holds actor emotion more confidently, handles VFX compositing, lip-sync, and multi-character scenes better, and has more imagination for surreal briefs. You pay for that quality — API access is about 23 cents per second at 720p, 52% more than Seedance 2.0 at the same resolution, and 4K can hit two dollars per second. At those rates the model is hard to use for routine ad cuts or social volume — the price does not pay back.
Wan 3.0: the real advantage
On artistic invention Wan 3.0 trails Seedance — multi-character and surreal scenes are weaker. Where precision matters — holding the first frame, keeping identity in motion, plausible physics — it did not let us down. It uniquely offers up to 30 seconds and up to 1080p versus 720p on Seedance 2.5. We would not call Wan 3.0 a picture breakthrough, but as a workhorse for volume it is enough.
Price in practice: on OpenRouter Wan 3.0 starts at $0.0425/s versus $0.1028/s for Seedance 2.5 — a 30-second 720p clip is about $1.2 versus $3.6 for the same video in Seedance. On real projects we see a 4–5× gap in Wan’s favour. That is why we call it a cheap Seedance stand-in, not a full rival.
When to pick Wan vs Seedance
The rule is simple: if the job is to animate a specific still, keep face and wardrobe undistorted, or ship a longer cheaper clip for ads, travel, or a music video — take Wan 3.0. If several characters, VFX, complex choreography, or unusual stylization are in frame — we still pick Seedance 2.5 despite the price.
